Open Captions vs Closed Captions
Open captions are always visible and cannot be turned off, unlike closed captions, which viewers can enable or disable.
Closed captions are caption data embedded with video and audio content. These captions can be activated by the user through their device's remote control but do not automatically display on the screen for most viewers.
In contrast, open captions are permanently embedded in the video, meaning they are always visible to all viewers and cannot be turned off.
Typically, captions are configured as closed captions by default, allowing viewers the option to enable them. If you wish to enable open captions for your channel or use them on your preview channel for monitoring, please follow the steps below.
Turning on Open Captions
Open captions are set on the channel level. Any captioned item played on that channel will show open captions both on the confidence monitor in the UI as well as on your broadcast, if applicable.
- Navigate to the settings of the channel for which you want to enable open captions by going to CASTUS > Services and choosing the Settings icon next to the desired channel.
- Select the Caption dropdown option.
- Change Render Eia 608 from Auto to CC1.
- Choose Apply at the top of the screen.
NOTE: For additional language options beyond English, select CC2 - CC4 based on the number of translations you have. To revert to closed captions, select Auto.
